About Hayes Girl Highlands
Some quiet days, some chaos, and a lot of fluffy, hairy cows. Hayes Girl Highlands is a small farm just outside Ballarat where Highland cattle are raised slow, calm, and full of personality.
Meet the Girl
I’m Chels — the girl behind Hayes Girl Highlands. What started as a love for country life (and for Highland cattle in particular) has grown into a small farm and a herd of cattle with big character. Out here just outside Ballarat, I raise Highland cattle the way I think it should be — with time, space, calm handling, and plenty of paddock time.
In my free time you’ll find me in the paddock (usually surrounded by cows who think they’re dogs), and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
How we Raise Our Cattle
Raising good cattle takes time, patience, and proper care & handling — and that’s exactly what we focus on here at Hayes Girl Highlands.
Our approach is simple:
Calm handling & low-stress management
Plenty of paddock space to roam and graze
Socialised from a young age where possible — with plenty of human, dog, sheep & chicken interaction
Focus on temperament first — we want cattle that are calm, curious, and suited to small herds or lifestyle properties
If you’re after cattle that have been raised properly — slow, calm, and with plenty of paddock time — you’ll find them here. We prioritise raising cattle that we are proud to sell.
Meet the Helpers
Ours is a small family farm, and it’s always been that way. We were all born and raised right here on this property — me and my two sisters, Monty & Jas — and it’s still home and always will be. Mum and Dad own the land, but Hayes Girl Highlands is our shared space, shaped by all of us in different ways.
I started Hayes Girl Highlands with the help of Dad and Monty — Dad’s still my number one helper, and between him, Mum, Monty and Jas, there’s always someone around to lend a hand (or sneak a cuddle with the cows). It’s a family effort through and through, and that’s exactly how I like it.
