About Highland Cattle

Highland cattle are a hardy, slow-growing Scottish breed known for their long coats, distinctive horns and calm nature. They’re well suited to a wide range of Australian climates — including the cooler seasons we get here in Ballarat & the rest of Victoria — and do well on both larger properties and smaller hobby farms.

They thrive on good pasture, are excellent foragers, and their unique look and calm temperament makes them a favourite for lifestyle farms and small herds.

Are Highland Cattle Right For You?

While Highland cattle are a wonderful breed, they’re not for everyone. We recommend doing your research before buying — and we’re always happy to chat and help you decide if they’re the right fit for your property.

A few things to consider:

  • Highland cattle do best with plenty of space — they’re a hardy outdoor breed, not suited to small pens or lots

  • They’re a herd animal — at least two cattle are recommended so they have proper company

  • Their coat is beautiful but also requires awareness — they’ll shed in warm weather but still need good shade and shelter

  • They are not a “beginner’s pet” — they’re livestock and need proper handling, infrastructure and care

  • They’re typically a slow maturing breed — they usually live for up to 20 years so are a long-term investment to your property.

If you love the breed and can provide the right setup and care, Highland cattle are incredibly rewarding animals to keep.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No — our Highland cattle are unregistered, but we focus heavily on temperament, health, and proper raising practices. Many of our buyers are looking for well-socialised cattle for hobby farms or small herds, where temperament and friendliness are key.

  • As Highland cattle are herd animals, we always recommend buying at least two if you don’t already have cattle on your property. They are happiest with proper herd companionship.

  • Some of our cattle are halter trained — this will be noted in the individual listing if applicable. All cattle are raised to be calm and easy to handle around people. Most of our cattle are sold as paddock friendly which means you can walk around them with ease and usually hand feed them.

  • Our cattle are paddock-raised with access to good pasture and hay, with supplementary feed as needed. They are handled calmly and exposed to people from a young age. They all LOVE being fed little lucerne cubes as a special snack.

  • We are based just outside Ballarat, Victoria — we welcome enquiries from across Victoria and interstate (transport can be arranged).

  • Yes — we can arrange delivery for an additional fee, or you are welcome to organise your own transport. We will work with you to ensure the handover is safe and low-stress for the cattle.

Disclaimer:
We do our best to describe each animal accurately and honestly, based on our handling and observations. However, temperament and behaviour can vary, and livestock handling experience is recommended. Buyers are responsible for ensuring they have suitable facilities and the skills required to manage cattle safely. All livestock sales are subject to our standard sale terms — please contact us for details.
